Winter Panel Helps Sponsor Captain Planet Foundation Zero Energy Demonstration Cottage

Winter Panel was among the sponsors of the Captain Planet Foundation Zero Energy Demonstration Cottage, a 1,500 square foot energy-efficient structure built with structural insulated panels (SIPs). The project was an attempt to produce a building with net zero energy and resource impact, and yet still provide for "safe, affordable, comfortable, durable, and attractive shelter."

According to the Captain Planet Foundation Web site, "It will demonstrate a whole-system building approach which is rooted in the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America Program and will feature products donated by numerous corporations and organizations. Every detail and product used is an important part of the overall system from the foundation's moisture barrier to the choice of light bulbs. By self-containing its fuel, water and waste, this home leaves virtually no trace of its existence on the environment and leaves the homeowner independent from the local utilities."

Winter Panel provided the roof panels for the cottage; they were 6 1/2" structural panels with polyisocyanurate foam cores yielding an R38 value. The panels were precut at Winter Panel's plant, and shipped to Atlanta.

Less is more, zero is most.

Every home and its operation have significant impact on the environment. But there are homes with remarkably small environmental footprints. What do they look like? What features do they have? Can these homes tread lightly on the land and the global environment and be comfortable, safe, durable, and have great market value?

The Captain Planet Demonstration Home is one answer to these questions. We call this home the "double-naught cottage" because, along the broad spectrum of residential environmental impact, it's just about as close as you can expect to get to net zero energy and resource impact. And yet, the "double-naught cottage" still provides for safe, affordable, comfortable, durable, attractive shelter.

Designing and building a zero-energy, zero-resource home is not just about efficient components, it's about how these elements work together and how they work in the context of the local environment. The "double-naught cottage" is meant to familiarize you with the full range of features to consider in efficient, even self-sufficient, home design and operation. It's also meant to inform you about how your choices in one aspect of efficiency are linked to others and how some of your choices will depend on your site, your local environment, and the resources they provide or require.

The "double-naught cottage" addresses four main areas of environmental impact:
  1. Energy
  2. Materials
  3. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
  4. Site

The community was able to explore the fully functional demonstration home and learn how its features can make an impact on their health, the health of their family, the energy-efficiency of their home and their home's impact on the environment surrounding them. The home debuted in Atlanta, GA April 18-21, 2001 at the Atlanta Home Show, a show that hosted more than 80,000 consumers over a four-day period. The home then moved to Washington, D.C. where it was showcased at the National Park Service's First Annual Sustainability Fair May 3-4, 2002.

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation, according to their Web site, "is to fund and support hands-on environmental projects for children and youths. Our objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. Through environmental education, we believe that children can achieve a better understanding and appreciation for the world in which they live."
